A long time ago, written literacy was not as important as it is nowadays. Then stories were passed down from generation to generation and research shows that the stories stayed fairly accurately over time. It seems that individuals with dyslexia must not have been as disadvantage then as they are in this culture. Some individuals were taught basic reading, writing, and mathematics in order for business readings, but it wasn’t expected that everyone would learn.
Since the creation of the Guttenburg Press this reliance on auditory emphasis in a culture has turned into a textual based emphasis and immediately individuals with dyslexia became at a disadvantage. Without the basic of literacy skills, an individual almost drowns with the work expected of them that needs to be read or written.
A curious thought: how successful were people with dyslexia in a oral culture as compared to a text culture? I would think no-one would even notice they struggled.
