Books should be read over and over to children. Most children enjoys this and it can be a bonding moment between parents and the child.
While reading the book, comments can be made about the language, such as where words rhyme, about what will happen in the story, encouraging predictions of sounds and words and sentence patterns.
For example: What sound is at the beginning of the word? What sound is heard at the end of the word? What is the word at the beginning of the sentence? At the end? Was that a question or a statement?
It is best to not do all of these things each and every time through the book as it would remove some of the enjoyment and become just a chore, but as it comes up, it can help develop students’ reading skills.
