Dyslexia runs in families and mine is no exception. My brother was born with a severe form. When most kids were sounding out words, he was still trying to remember the names of the letters. When most kids are switching from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” my brother was still struggling to blend sounds into words. These struggles were not his fault. His brain just didn’t process the letter sounds the same way everybody else’s did.
They enrolled him in special education, which helped a little, but was still not successful in helping him overcome the challenges of dyslexia.
He was still quite bright and was able to figure things out mechanically, although he did have a habit of taking things apart and not putting them back together again.
Eventually, he was mainstreamed with accommodations. He was allowed to listen to his books, present his answers orally, and had extended time on assignments. He was able to graduate high school, but he still doesn’t read.
